Running back Saquon Barkley tried to lead his team on Sunday afternoon against the Washington Commanders. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts suffered a concussion in the first quarter of the game, leaving the offense in the hands of backup Kenny Pickett.

Despite Philadelphia leading the majority of the game, a fourth-quarter surge by the Washington Commanders led to a 36-33 loss. Running back Saquon Barkley expressed his frustration over the team's loss and inability to lock up the second seed in the NFC. Barkley told reporters after the game that moving forward it's all about winning the final two games and not panicking at this point.

"It sucks. But at the end of the day, it is what it is. We're going to go out there and we're going to win every football game -- that's our mindset as a team. But at the same time, when we lose and we didn't do what we wanted to accomplish, we're not going to panic," Barkley told reporters after Sunday's loss.

The 27-year-old running back, considered a candidate for MVP this season, had 29 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles will now anxiously wait to see if quarterback Jalen Hurts will be ready for next week's divisional game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Eagles RB Saquon Barkley nearing single-season record

Against Washington, Saquon Barkley rushed for over 100 yards for the 10th time in the 2024 NFL season. In 15 regular season games, Barkley now has 1,838 rushing yards, just 268 yards from passing Eric Dickerson for most yards in a single season at 2,105 yards, which he accomplished in 1984.

If the running back surpasses the 2,000 rushing mark, he would be the ninth player in NFL history to do so. The last running back to rush for 2,000 yards was Derrick Henry, who did it in 2020 as a member of the Tennessee Titans.

While Saquon Barkley's chase for a 40-year-old record will be a challenge, it's not out of the question. The Philadelphia Eagles have yet to win the NFC East divisional title and are still trying to secure the number two seed in the NFC. This means the running back will have plenty to play for in the final two matchups of the 2024 NFL season.

Saquon Barkley has rushed for an average of 122.5 yards per game this season. He did rush 255 yards in Week 12 against the Los Angeles Rams, so nothing is out question for the star running back.
