Seahawks QB Geno Smith anoints top 2027 NFL draft prospect as "best in the nation"

After the best year of his career in 2022, Geno Smith signed a three-year, $75 million contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks the following offseason. He is now entering the second year of his contract.

The team acquired Sam Howell from the Washington Commanders this offseason, but the veteran quarterback is expected to start under new head coach Mike Macdonald.

Smith was recently left quite impressed with Ohio State's star freshman receiver, Jeremiah Smith. On Friday, The 33-year-old quarterback reposted a video of the wide receiver and said:

"Best in the NATION, True Freshman."

Jeremiah Smith put up great numbers in high school with Chaminade-Madonna. In 35 games, he had 179 receptions for 3,043 yards and 45 touchdowns. Smith averaged 17.0 yards per reception and will likely start for Ohio State this year.

Jeremiah and Geno are both native to Florida, and the Seahawks quarterback seems excited by the receiver's growth. The Ohio State star will be eligible for the NFL draft in 2027. From all indications, he is expected to be a first-round pick.

Ohio State is well known for producing great NFL receivers, and Smith is likely to have a similar impact in college as Marvin Harrison Jr., Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Geno Smith's Seahawks: Season preview 2024/2025

Geno Smith: Los Angeles Rams vs Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith: Los Angeles Rams vs Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks finished 9-8 last season, but unfortunately, they narrowly missed the playoffs. Geno Smith dealt with a groin injury last season, which caused him to miss two games. However, he is fully healthy and on track to play in Week 1.

Pete Carroll, who coached the Seahawks for 14 seasons, is no longer the man in charge. Former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald will take over the reins, and fans are excited about a fresh start.

Making the playoffs will be tough for the Seahawks, as their division has also improved since last season. Kyler Murray being healthy makes the Arizona Cardinals a team capable of upsetting many teams, while the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers are seen as the likely teams to win the division.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Geno Smith. If he doesn't play well this year and the team underperforms, the front office might look to start over with Sam Howell or draft another quarterback next year. Last year, he threw for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 15 games with a passer rating of 92.1 and made the Pro Bowl.
