After Carson Wentz had thumb surgery earlier this week, the Washington Commanders are poised to become the 10th franchise this campaign to start a backup quarterback.
Wentz sustained damage to his thumb late in the second quarter of Thursday's victory over the Chicago Bears. However, he continued to play the remainder of the match without a splint or tape to provide him with protection. He declared that he would be "all good," but afterward claimed that his thumb was "a bit sore."
The Commanders will look to backup Taylor Heinicke to cover the hole. Rookie Sam Howell is then expected to act as his backup.

Even while Washington came out on top, Wentz sputtered, going 12-of-22 for 99 yards. The Commanders struggled to advance the ball down the pitch. However, a botched punt saw them score their lone touchdown.
Should you keep Carson Wentz on your fantasy team?
Carson Wentz threw for 650 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two matches of the year. Since then, he has exceeded 211 passing yards just once while tossing more than three touchdown passes and three interceptions in his last four matches. Unfortunately, he has a cracked finger on his throwing hand, which will likely keep him out for a few weeks.
Despite his inconsistent real-life passing, Wentz remains a respectable fantasy quarterback. He recorded over 200 rushing yards for the third consecutive year last year. He has averaged more than 12 rushing yards a game during the previous five years.
In addition, Wentz may have the finest wide receiver group he has ever played with. The likes of Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel certainly aids the quarterback in the passing game. This on top of a solid running game that features Antonio Gibson and JD McKissic.
According to the team, Carson Wentz went into surgery for his right hand's fractured thumb on Monday in Los Angeles. He has started rehabilitation, although it is unclear when he will be able to return. As a result, Wentz won't play Sunday at FedEx Field against the Green Bay Packers, though the franchise hasn't decided whether to put him on injured reserve yet.
Dropping Carson Wentz is a simple choice.
