Skip Bayless is not happy about the Dallas Cowboys' recent hiring of Brian Schottenheimer as coach.

He aired his views on "The Skip Bayless Show." The analyst offered a quick reaction to the news that Mike McCarthy's understudy and last season's offensive coordinator, Schottenheimer, has been hired by Jerry Jones for the gig.

"I'm sorry, my worst nightmare is now my Dallas Cowboy reality," Bayless exploded. "I don't know how much more I can take. Mike McCarthy's best buddy just replaced him as the next Mike McCarthy 'head coach' of my Dallas Cowboys. Translation - next in line to be Jerry Jones' puppet - is Brian Schottenheimer. I am shot in the heart.

"I'm gut-shot by Schotty. Brian Schottenheimer is the head coach – if you told me this a week ago, I would have laughed in your face. I tried to tell you – he's been coaching for 28 years in the National Football League. 28 years! And he's changed jobs 13 times. What does that tell you about Brian Schottenheimer? Why would you have to change jobs 13 times?"

Bayless continued his tirade:

"He's never been a head coach because he's never been offered a head coaching job in 28 years. He's 51 years of age and nobody in the National Football League, until now, has offered him a head coaching job. Why, why, why, why, why? I wish Jerry (Jones) would have just named himself the head coach. At least it would be fun. At least it would be interesting."

A look at Brian Schottenheimer in the NFL

Schottenheimer began his coaching career back in 1997 when he landed an assistant position with the St. Louis Rams. Over the years, he has served on the coaching staff for teams such as the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Chargers, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars and several others.

He began his stint with the Cowboys as a coaching analyst in 2022, before working his way up to offensive coordinator in 2023. Now, he's being handed the reins to one of the most coveted franchises in all of sports.

He is hoping to build off of a disappointing 2024 campaign that saw Dallas string together a record of just 7-10 and thus, failing to make the playoffs.

Bayless seems to share the same reaction as many Cowboys fans on social media, who seem disappointed by the hiring of Schottenheimer. There were more appealing names such as Liam Coen, Joe Brady and Pete Carroll, who were all available after the regular season's conclusion.

However, with the likes of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb on offense, and a talented defensive roster, perhaps Schottenheimer can exceed expectations with Dallas in the 2025 season.
