Former NFL MVP Cam Newton recently released a video in which he indicated that he is willing to become a backup quarterback to get back in the league. Newton listed multiple quarterbacks that he would happily be a backup to, but on that list, there was no mention of Patrick Mahomes.
Many were surprised by the exclusion of Mahomes from that list, and they lashed out at Newton. Recently, Skip Bayless also criticized the former Carolina Panthers quarterback for his list. Here's what Bayless said on "Undisputed":
"I'm still a Cam fan. I was before his draft, I certainly was in 2015, but that arrogance you speak of has now turned into delusional arrogance… The more he spoke, the more confused I got. I have no idea how you can rank the quarterbacks that you would be willing to back up because he put them in order, starting with Deshaun.
"I was listening hard to this that all the other quarterbacks not on this list he would like to go compete with because he believes he could beat them out and he said it's like let the better man win the competition. So he said, I love Patrick, I got all the respect in the world for Patrick.

"But I think he was indicating that he would like to go compete against Patrick Mahomes and against Justin Herbert and against Trevor Lawrence to go compete for their job. Well, I'm saying that's how it came across, I'm pretty sure that's what he was saying.
"I want to know who in their right damn mind thinks that Cam Newton can beat out Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert for the starting job on their respective team."
Skip Bayless is certainly right as in the present age, nobody would give Newton a shot against the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, or Justin Herbert. Moreover, him landing a spot as the starting quarterback on any of the 32 teams in the NFL is also unlikely.
Cam Newton mentioned that he would be willing to be a backup for incoming quarterbacks and even Malik Willis, but not the elite quarterbacks in the league. This left many surprised and as a result, not many believe that any team would be willing to sign him.
A return to NFL seems unlikely for Cam Newton
Cam Newton played nine seasons for the Carolina Panthers and transformed himself into one of the best quarterbacks in the league. However, due to injuries and his playing style, he isn't that great a quarterback anymore.
As stated by Skip Bayless, Newton carries a lot of baggage with him and not many teams in the NFL would entertain that. Despite Newton claiming that he is open to being a backup quarterback, it would be quite surprising if a team signs him for next season.
