The Pittsburgh Steelers have named veteran Russell Wilson the starting quarterback for the 2024 season. Wilson was in competition with Justin Fields, who the Steelers acquired from the Chicago Bears via trade in the offseason.
Wilson was signed in March after Denver released him. Pittsburgh cleared out the existing quarterback room during the offseason, and later signed backup quarterback Kyle Allen.
After Wilson was named the team's starting quarterback over Fields, Steleers fans had mixed reactions to the news.

Some fans think Fields should have been named the starter over Wilson, and think he'd be a better fit for the Steelers' offense. Others predicted that Wilson will get benched at some point in the season, with Fields getting a chance to start.
Here's how fans reacted:
"Bad choice," one fan wrote.
"Justin Fields will be starting by week 8," one fan predicted.
"I give him 2 weeks and after Wilson loses at Atlanta and Denver it’s all over for Russ," one fan said.
While some fans weren't thrilled about the news, others expected the Steelers to name Wilson the starter. Fans seem more confident in the veteran Wilson leading the team than Fields.
Russell Wilson has made nine Pro Bowls, won a super Bowl, and has plenty of playoff experience. He may be past his prime, but he has the better resume than Fields.
Here's how other fans reacted:
"They have to do that," one fan said.
"IF YOU WANT TO WIN, PUT RUSS IN," another fan wrote.
"Yeah, we knew this already," a fan Tweeted.
The Steelers and Russell Wilson open the season against the Atlanta Falcons on the road.
With the Steelers naming a starter, the New England Patriots are the only team yet to name a starting QB
With the Pittsburgh Steelers officially naming Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback for the 2024 season, the only team that has yet to name the starting quarterback this season is the New England Patriots.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said he has picked his starting quarterback, but won't publicly say who it is until Thursday.
Mayo said:
“I don’t think I have to explain it to anyone else. It’s my decision and look, if it doesn’t work, blame me…”
Will it be rookie third-overall pick Drake Maye that gets the start? Or it will it be veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett that starts the season?
By the numbers, Maye completed 21 of 34 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown this preseason. Brissett completed 5 of 14 passes for 36 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception this preseason.
