When was Roger Goodell named NFL Commissioner?

On August 8, 2006, Roger Goodell was named the new commissioner of the NFL, beating out Gregg Levy for the position. Goodell's career in the NFL started in 1982 when he was an administrative intern for the NFL's office in New York.

He was hired as an intern for the New York Jets in 1983 but that position didn't last long as he decided to take another position in the league's office. This time, he worked with the league's public relations department.

In 1987 Goodell was hired as the assistant to AFC president Lamar Hunt. In the years that followed, he worked his way up the ranks of the NFL's operations. In 2001, received a big promotion that would put him in line to eventually become league commissioner.
