Former NFL MVP Cam Newton has criticized Tom Brady’s $37.5 million annual broadcasting deal with Fox. Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, 4th&1, Newton wondered if Brady’s role as both a Fox analyst and part-owner of the Raiders creates problems.

Without holding back, Newton said:

“Does the affiliation of Tom Brady bring in more viewership? Sure. But I really thought it was interesting—him covering the game from his lanes. I don’t think he’s able to properly give the service that he really wants because of the conflict of interest, him being a minority owner with the Raiders.”

He further explained that Brady’s role as a part-owner of the Raiders stops him from accessing practices, locker rooms, and important conversations that other broadcasters usually get. Therefore, Newton believes this makes Brady’s massive Fox deal less valuable.

"Fox getting slighted here, you see, I'm saying like we're paying you 37 and a half million dollars to do some of your job," Newton exclaimed. "And what's the what's the flex? By saying that you have access to something that is only you're not able to do it to the best of your ability, you know? So I'm like, Damn, that's f**ked up."

Cam Newton’s comments come at an important time since all eyes are on the Commanders-Lions playoff game, which will be called by Brady.

Tom Brady faces big questions as he steps into Ford Field on Saturday night

This playoff game between the Lions and the Commanders puts Tom Brady in a tricky spot.

Two Lions coaches, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, are candidates for the Raiders’ head coaching job. As a Raiders owner, Brady could have a say in their hiring. As a Fox broadcaster, he’s expected to provide unbiased commentary about the game.

Therefore, it would be interesting to see if Brady can be fair when talking about Johnson and Glenn.

Like Cam Newton said, Tom Brady cannot attend team practices, join meetings with NFL teams, and publicly criticize officials. These rules are purely made to avoid any sort of conflict of interest. So far, Brady has followed them. However, Saturday’s playoff game raises fresh concerns.
