Mike McCarthy is beginning to seem like déjà vu for former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett's fans. After NFL insider Tom Pelissero stated that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is preparing for contract talks with McCarthy despite a turbulent 2024 season, NFL fans shared their thoughts.

"This is Jason Garrett all over again," one fan wrote.

"I dont get it man."

A third fan reacted:

"Mike McCarthy STINKS."

More fans came up with their takes.

"Those two clowns 🤡 deserve each other," one fan commented.

McCarthy's leadership is under scrutiny after the Cowboys' 7-10 record in 2024 marked their first losing season in four years. Although the team started strong with a win over the Cleveland Browns, factors like injuries, erratic performances and a midseason collapse raised questions about the head coach's ability to steer the Dallas Cowboys toward championship aspirations.

There came a time in the late season when the team rallied but consecutive losses in Weeks 16 and 17 ultimately dashed all the playoff dreams.

Cut to the present, adding fuel to the fire, the Chicago Bears have reportedly expressed interest in McCarthy. However, Dallas denied the request earlier this week.

Clearly, Jerry Jones' intent is to retain McCarthy or at least control his destiny in the coming days.

Jerry Jones has been here before.

In January 2007, Jason Garrett joined as the Dallas Cowboys' offensive coordinator. That year, he led the team to the NFL's second-best offense with a 13–3 record. Owing to his potential, he started getting offers from other NFL teams but he chose to remain with Dallas.

Later, on November 8, 2010, Garrett was named interim head coach after a 1–7 season start under Wade Phillips. Under his guidance, the Cowboys rallied with a 5–3 record, which led him to become the official head coach on January 6, 2011.

From 2011-2013, Garrett’s tenure turned out to be poor with three consecutive 8–8 seasons and losses in season finales. Playoff heartbreak followed in 2014.

In 2016, he once again shone with rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott driving the Cowboys to a 13–3 season. Yes, there was once again another playoff disappointment, but Garrett was named NFL Coach of the Year. Sadly, the following seasons saw fluctuating success.

Finally, in January 2020, Garrett parted ways with the Cowboys.

During Garrett’s tenure, Jerry Jones resisted sweeping changes. Garrett’s run lasted a decade but delivered only three playoff appearances. Mike McCarthy’s tenure so far has followed a similar trajectory. There were flashes of brilliance but ultimately postseason disappointments take over.

In his four years as head coach, McCarthy has led the Cowboys to a 49-35 regular-season record but has yet to deliver a deep playoff run.
