NFL Preseason is finally here in earnest and so are instant reactions as Giants fans demand Tommy DeVito to start over Drew Lock. The former Seahawks backup was brought to New York with the expectation that he would be able to challenge Daniel Jones and offer quarterback play close to the level of a starter.
But after the first few minutes of the 2024 preseason game against the Lions, Giants fans were less than happy.
Lock repeatedly failed to find star rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers and then threw the first interception of the 2024 NFL season by passing it straight to Detroit's Brandon Joseph. That he was ahead in the pecking order in front of fan favorite and local boy DeVito has not sat well with parts of the supporters base and this moment certainly did not help.

Fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to demand that DeVito be given a chance and Lock not be retained just because he signed a new contract. Many made references to still keeping the jersey of the player who inspired hope when Daniel Jones was unavailable last season. Here are some of the responses.
"Tommy DeVito>Drew Lock," one fan put it simply.
The sentiment was widespread but other Giants fans were even more despairing that their quarterback options were Tommy DeVito, Drew Lock, and Daniel Jones. Here are some of those reactions.
"daniel jones, drew lock, and tommy devito. my white boys."
"Man the fact that Daniel Jones Drew Lock Tommy Devito Isn’t the worst QB room in the league is crazy lol."
"Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Tommy DeVito competing for the Giants starting QB role... (Worst Dictator Comparison)"
Tommy DeVito relieves Drew Lock and delivers Giants touchdown
When Drew Lock left the game, he was in pain. He looked to have hurt his hip and that allowed Tommy DeVito to come into the game. As he walked out, fans could be heard cheering for the local boy to walk on, which could not have sounded good to the former Seahawks quarterback.
But the Giants fans could claim that they were justified in asking for the change. Lock was not playing well and when he left the field, the Lions were leading 3-0.
After DeVito came in, he was not spectacular but he was on the field as New York scored its first touchdown of the preseason. It came on a quarterback draw play and, even though it will not count as a passing touchdown, he did well to disguise it effectively and throw the defense off course.
It was a good moment for DeVito and a bad one for Lock. Such is the fickle nature of the preseason when things can change on a dime. One only has a few reps to make an impression and if things don't pan out there is not much of an opportunity for redemption from the fans.
The important thing for both quarterbacks, though, is what Brian Daboll thought standing on the sidelines and if he was swayed by what supporters were shouting for the rafters or posting on social media.
