The Commanders waited 19 long years to break their playoff drought in the NFL and Jayden Daniels delivered with a virtuoso performance against the Buccaneers. The last time the Washington franchise won, they had a different name.

Yet, the rookie quarterback played far beyond his years and guided his team to a berth in the Divisional Round, where they will face the Lions in Detroit. Given their win over Tampa Bay on the road, they will hold little fear in facing the top-ranked team in the NFC.

It was not just how Jayden Daniels played as a whole. He finished with 268 yards, a passer rating of 110.2, and two touchdowns. What set him apart was his methodical precision in leading a two-minute drill that set up a field goal attempt with the score 20-20 and three seconds remaining. The conversion ensured that the Buccaneers never got the ball back and the Commanders went through with a walk-off field goal.

He exhibited maturity beyond his age and he knew exactly whom to thank after getting the win. In the post-match interview, when he was asked how he achieved what he did, Jayden Daniels said,

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels profits as Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield left to rue crucial mistake

Playoff games often come down to moments. In this Wild Card round game, the two teams were evenly matched but what made the difference was a crucial turnover by Baker Mayfield. He fumbled a snap and allowed the Commanders to recover. Had that not been the case, he could have been the one leading the Buccaneers on a two-minute walk-off drill.

Tampa Bay was leading 17-13 at that point and it handed the initiative back to Washington. While they managed to tie the game at 20-20 in due course, they could not control the possession at the end of the game because of that.

It was not the only time the Baker Mayfield made a mistake on the snap. He messed up a snap count in the red zone that could have led to a touchdown. Instead, the home team had to settle for a field goal. After the match, he exhibited leadership in conceding that the blunders were his mistake.

Jayden Daniels had no such apologies to make as he soaked in a precious victory. He has had an incredible rookie season and it is not yet done.
