The Minnesota Vikings have endured quite a few unfortunate losses through the NFL offseason. The most recent is the meniscus injury to rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

On Wednesday morning, Peter Schrager on "Good Morning Football" spoke about the Vikings' unfortunate circumstances.

Peter Schrager: [00:00:26] "Look, it's been a brutal last couple months for Minnesota. They had a horrible tragedy with one of their players. They've got, you know, stuff off the field with other ones and then they've got this injury and it's like we didn't want to start off the season this way. [00:00:37][11.2] GMFB"

In early July, Minnesota suffered the loss of rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson, who was tragically killed in a car accident in Maryland. A few weeks later, wide receiver Jordan Addison was arrested after he was found asleep behind the wheel of his car at Los Angeles International Airport and allegedly appeared to be under the influence at the time. Addison is thus likely facing a suspension from the NFL.

Training camp then kicked off and the bad news continued as Mekhi Blackmon suffered a torn ACL on the first day of practice. The next day, Shaquill Griffin suffered a hamstring injury and hasn't been able to practice since. The Minnesota Vikings definitely didn't expect their preseason to look like this.

The severity of Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy's injury

If the meniscus needs to be completely repaired, rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy's rookie campaign could reportedly be over before it even started. If the severity of the injury isn't that bad, he would miss anywhere from 4-6 weeks to start the 2024 NFL season.

McCarthy got his first experience at playing in the NFL on Saturday in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. While playing, he suffered a knee injury but didn't recognize that something had happened.

It wasn't until Monday when McCarthy reported to Minnesota's training staff that he was feeling discomfort in his knee. Imaging then showed that the former Michigan standout had suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee. McCarthy will undergo surgery this week to repair the injury and doctors will be able to see if the injury is a full repair or just a slight tear.
