The 11-5 Washington Commanders took a trip to Arlington to take on the beat-up Dallas Cowboys in their regular season finale. The Commanders already booked a spot in the playoffs so this game was all about ending the regular season on a high.
The Cowboys decided to take a look at Trey Lance with the former No. 3 overall pick in a contract year and while Lance showed some glimpses of his potential, there was little action from both teams in the first half.
Dallas’s defense was on it from the get-go as Micah Parsons racked up a sack on the first play. Parsons followed that up with another sack on 3rd-and-3 to shut down Washington’s first drive.
Washington missed an opportunity to swing the momentum when Olamide Zaccheaus dropped a catch that would have been a touchdown after Kliff Kingsbury drew something up to make that happen. The Commanders continued to struggle as Dallas’s defense made a statement in the first half.

Interestingly, Trey Lance’s parents Angela and Carlton were in attendance with the former No. 3 overall pick making his first start in 28 months.
Lance missed an opportunity to have his first TD pass in three years on an underthrow to Rico Dowdle but admitted his mistake then and there. He still finished with 125 yards at the half but it was just a half for the kicker and punters as both teams got nowhere when targeting the end zone.

Marcus Mariota subbed in for Daniels and got Zach Ertz his first touchdown of the day, inching the veteran tight end closer to a tidy bonus. Mariota’s TD drive brought the Commanders their first lead of the day at 10-9 in what was the first TD of the day.
If the first half was all about the Dallas defense, Washington’s defense turned up in the second led by Bobby Wagner but they couldn’t stop Rico Dowdle from giving Dallas the lead with a touchdown with seven minutes to go. That was only Dowdle’s second rushing TD of the year.
Washington got the ball back and kept it for a while but when it looked like they were down and out, Marcus Mariota showed up, throwing a touchdown to Terry McLaurin with two seconds left in the game. As a result, he set the single-season record for a Washington receiver with 13 TDs. Given Green Bay lost to Chicago at the end, the Commanders will now lock in the No. 6 seed. They will take on the No. 3 seed in the NFC, the Los Angeles Rams.
A 12-win season for Dan Quinn in his first year as Commanders head coach means there is a lot to look forward to in January and beyond as the franchise looks to put the stink of the Dan Snyder era behind them.

On the defensive side of things, Micah Parsons was clearly the man of the hour, which leaves one to wonder what might have been if Parsons hadn't suffered the cruel fate of injuries earlier this year. Alongside Trey Hendrickson and Myles Garrett, Parsons has played like a true DPOY contender over the past few weeks.
