Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets suffered their most devastating loss of the season in Week 17, as the Buffalo Bills steamrolled them 40-14 at the Highmark Stadium. The defeat could have been much worse. The Bills pulled out key starters on offense and defense after taking a 40-0 lead early in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Jets to make the final score less embarrassing.

Rodgers, who finished the game with 112 passing yards and two interceptions, exited the game in the fourth quarter, paving the way for veteran Tyrod Taylor to lead the Jets to two touchdowns. In the post-game press conference, the four-time MVP revealed he asked interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich to bench him and let the backup quarterback enter the contest.

Rodgers' revelation irked former Jets star Keyshawn Johnson, who called him out for asking to be benched with his team down 40-0.

On FS1's Speak, he said:

"The fact that you was 112 yards, two interceptions, you was sacked a bunch, and it was 33 -0, you decided to take your ball and go home because you wasn't getting your way. What's the difference between him and the dude in San Francisco [De'Vondre Campbell]? You quit on your team, man. I'm not gonna be nice to Aaron Rodgers like that."

The retired wide receiver also suggested that the franchise should part ways with the quarterback in the offseason. He added:

"I thought he was on a mission to convince them that he should come back. Based on what he did yesterday, I don't want to be nowhere near him... What the hell is wrong with Aaron Rodgers?"

Aaron Rodgers to leave the Jets in 2025?

The 2024 season has been unexpectedly tumultuous for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets. The team expected to embark on a deep run in the playoffs with the four-time MVP under center. Instead, they are 4-12 and need a new head coach and general manager in the offseason. They could even eye a new starting quarterback.

According to NFL insiders Zack Rosenblatt and Dianna Russini, owner Woody Johnson asked the coaching staff to bench Rodgers following the team's 10-9 loss at home to the Denver Broncos in Week 4. General manager Joe Douglas vouched for the quarterback to remain the starter. It proved to be a massive error on his part as he was fired after the team dropped to 3-8.

He was the second notable Jets employee to lose their job after head coach Robert Saleh, who was relieved of his duties after the team's 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5.

Rodgers has been open about wanting to play for the Jets in 2025. However, Johnson will decide whether the quarterback stays or leaves, and the reports suggest it will likely be the latter.
