The Dallas Cowboys have promoted Scott Tolzien to quarterback coach.

This was widely expected among analysts and fans alike. Tolzien replaces Doug Nussmeier, who has left the team to join the Los Angeles Chargers. However, the subject of debate at the moment is what this could mean for Dak Prescott.

Prescott has been one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the NFL since he was drafted in 2016. He will work with Tolzien, who joined the Cowboys as a coaching assistant when Mike McCarthy was hired as the team's Head Coach.

Scott Tolzien’s profile

Tolzien is a former NFL quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, and the Indianapolis Colts. He started his football journey at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Tolzien would go on to have an uneventful career in the NFL, signing with three teams and making only 10 appearances. Thus, coaching was the next option for him after his retirement from professional football. He returned to his the college team, Wisconsin Badgers, as an analyst working on scouting opponents in 2019.

Tolzien entered into professional coaching in 2020 after joining the Cowboys as a coaching assistant. He then joined the coaching staff of Mike McCarthy, who was his head coach at Green Bay Packers, and has now taken the helm of affairs in Dallas and has worked diligently with the coaching team since then to become a crucial member.

Prospects in the New Role

Scott Tolzien's promotion to the role of quarterback coach could have a profound impact on Prescott and the team's quarterback-related operations. The 35 years old has been praised for his understanding of the game and would be crucial in diagnosing and fixing issues related to the quarterback position for the Cowboys.

His knowledge is expected to provide the Cowboys with a much-needed boost in the quarterback coaching department, which would prove pivotal for Prescott.

Tolzien's appointment also provides the Cowboys with a strong backup plan for the quarterback position. Prescott is the undisputed starter for the team in the foreseeable future, but Tolzien's experience working with young players is crucial to providing guidance and mentorship to the team's younger quarterbacks.
