From NFL to NASCAR: The story of Joe Gibbs and son Coy Gibbs
Coy Gibbs was the son of former NFL head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs. The senior Gibbs was the head coach of the Washington football franchise from 1981 to 1992. During that time, they won the Super Bowl three times, each time with a different starting quarterback. He is the only head coach in NFL history to ever achieve this feat and is therefore known as one of the greatest coaches of all time.

He left the NFL to pursue his passion for NASCAR and founded Joe Gibbs Racing. The racing unit has won five NASCAR Cup series championships till date. He returned to the NFL in 2004 and led the Washington franchise again until 2007 before retiring again.
Coy Gibbs was his son and mirrored his father's career for a long time. He played as a linebacker for Stanford University from 1991 to 1994 and led the team in tackles in his senior season. However, he became a NASCAR driver in 2001, starting with their Craftsman Truck Series. He remained there for two years before moving to car racing, where he finished runner-up as the Rookie of the Year in 2003 in the Busch Series.
However, that turned out to be his last year in active racing as he followed his father back into football as the elder Gibbs became Washington's head coach again. He was the Offensive Quality Control Assistant during his father's entire tenure, which lasted until 2007.
In 2007, he returned to racing again as an executive, as part of his father's racing team. He was instrumental in establishing Joe Gibbs Racing Motocross in 2008. He was in charge of the operations in tandem with motocross industry expert David Evans. It is based out of North Carolina, where Coy Gibbs resided until his untimely passing.
He leaves behind his wife Heather and four children. All of us at Sportskeeda send our deepest condolences to his grieving family and friends.
