Dak Prescott set alarm bells ringing among the Cowboys' fanbase after pictures emerged on social media wearing a protective boot on a getaway at Los Cabos. It encased his right foot and immediately questions were asked about his injury status, especially in the light of upcoming training camps.
It is not known how he picked up the injury but sources say that it is nothing serious and he should be fit in time for the training camp. Based on the latest reports, he is dealing with a right ankle sprain. It is not expected to affect his preparations for the upcoming season, with NFL Insider Ian Rapoport writing:
"#Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, spotted here in a protective walking boot, is dealing with a very minor foot sprain and has been for a few days. It’s not considered to be anything that should affect his preparation for 2024."

Right ankle a sore spot for Dak Prescott
While Dak Prescott is expected to recover soon from this injury, his right ankle is an area that might need to be constantly monitored. Back in the 2020 season, he suffered a compound fracture on that joint against the New York Giants in Week 5 of the regular season. He needed surgery and was ruled out for the rest of the year.
He has reportedly worn the protective boot for a week now, but it could be more than that if he picked it up anytime during practice. The last time the Cowboys were there for scheduled practice at the mandatory minicamp was on June 5. Dak Prescott was not wearing any support on his right foot at that time. He might have also injured it outside of practice facilities.
If he is unable to start, the Cowboys have two decent backup options. Cooper Rush has often relieved Dak Prescott when he has been injured in the last couple of seasons and has acquitted himself well in challenging circumstances. They also have Trey Lance, a former first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers, whom they acquired in a trade last year. He could come in and do a decent job at the position since he has had a year of learning the system.
But neither of those situations are likely to come to pass and the Cowboys' presumptive starter should be back to his usual practice rhythm, based on what all sources and reports are telling us. Dallas can't afford to start their 2024 season preparations with their quarterback on the sidelines.
