Why is Tyler Huntley in the Pro Bowl? The Ravens backup QB was a surprise addition to many in the NFL world

Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley was a surprise addition to the 2023 Pro Bowl Games.

Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson was injured late in the season. He was replaced by Huntley, who started just four games and threw two touchdown passes. Huntley was chosen over other AFC quarterbacks who were either unavailable or pulled out of the competition.

After the Pro Bowl teams are announced, voting for the alternates begins. Voting is done by the players and they select who they think is most deserving.

Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Joe Burrow were the three original AFC quarterbacks named to the Pro Bowl weekend. Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert, Trevor Lawrence, Lamar Jackson, Tyler Huntley and Derek Carr were voted in as alternates in that order.

As Mahomes is in the Super Bowl, he is not eligible for the games. Tagovailoa, the top backup quarterback, was ruled out of the contest as he was still in the NFL's concussion protocol. Additionally, second alternate Justin Herbert will not play this season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum. Burrow subsequently withdrew from the Pro Bowl as well.

So, in the end, Lawrence, Huntley and Carr are the AFC's QBs in the games.

Tyler Huntley's 2022 season doesn't really warrant a Pro Bowl selection

Tyler Huntley assisted the Ravens this season in securing a spot in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. During the regular season, he completed 658 passes for 658 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. Huntley added 137 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Huntley started just four of the six games he played for the Ravens. Although he served as Lamar Jackson's primary backup, he himself missed a game due to a shoulder injury.

His stats don't exactly scream Pro Bowl selection, and he was something of a surprise package. However, he clearly has enormous athletic ability and could shine in the Pro Bowl Games.

Tyler Huntley was a late addition to the Pro Bowl, but he proved why he was worth the invitation. Huntley tied for second place among the six Pro Bowlers in an accurate passing exercise with 21 points. Only Derek Carr of the Raiders, who went off and scored 31 points, finished ahead.

Huntley came close to nailing the trickiest objective, a 10-point toss. After Carr's try, the AFC won the first three games of the day's four contests, 3-0.

After a stagnant start, Huntley picked up the pace and made six of seven shots on target. His pass, which would have been worth 10 points, clanged off the rim. This made him the quarterback who came the closest to launching a 60-yard bomb into the basket.

Peyton Manning, a former player for the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts, serves as Huntley's AFC coach. Eli Manning, formerly of the New York Giants, leads the NFC.
