Why does veteran ESPN writer think Joe Montana hates the idea of Tom Brady passing him as the GOAT?

Tom Brady and Joe Montana are two of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time. In fact, many people view them as the two greatest quarterbacks of all-time. Hall of Fame legendary linebacker Lawrence Taylor said he'd choose Joe Montana over Tom Brady.

Overall, many would agree and side with Brady being labeled as the greatest of all-time.

Brady officially retired from the game last week on Feb. 1, and he retired as the consensus greatest football player of all-time. While Brady has had the best career of any NFL player, not everyone is happy to see him on top.

Montana is reportedly envious of Brady for taking his status as the greatest quarterback to ever live.

"The Dan Patrick Show" hosted Wright Thompson, a senior writer who recently published an article on ESPN about Montana. Thompson was asked how Montana felt about Brady surpassing him as the greatest quarterback of all-time.

Thompson said:

“He hates it. He’s less jealous of the rings, than he is of the fact he gets to watch someone else gets to live his life that got ripped from him.”

For around 20 years, Joe Montana boasted the title of, "The greatest of all-time."

After winning a National Championship in college with Notre Dame in 1977, he joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1979. In 14 seasons with the 49ers, he won four Super Bowls and three Super Bowl MVPs, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

One reason why Montana was deemed the GOAT was because of his perfect Super Bowl record. He finished his career with a perfect 4-0 record in the big game.

Brady took his status as the GOAT by surpassing him with seven Super Bowl victories. He wasn't undefeated in Super Bowls like Montana, but he made six more appearances in the big game. Brady also finished his career with more passing completions, yards, touchdowns and wins than any other QB in the history of the game.

There's no debate that Brady is the greatest of all time, and Montana is just going to have to live with that fact for the rest of his life.
