Will roughing the passer call be reviewable by replay? NFL owners set to meet for amendment to key rules

Will roughing the passer call be reviewable by replay in the NFL?

NFL owners are set to meet on potential rule changes, and roughing the passer could be on the agenda. The call is almost always controversial and continues to upset defenses and many fans every single year.

The league has gone for a more protective approach to its players, specifically quarterbacks. As a result, there have been a lot of roughing the passer calls that are extremely questionable.

Now, per NFL reporter Judy Battista, the league is considering making it reviewable.

Battista tweeted:

"Owners will consider several rules proposals at the NFL's annual meeting. As the meeting begins, does not seem to be enough support for making roughing the passer reviewable by replay, according to a person familiar with the Competition Comm. conversations."

Many calls in a football game are not reviewable. For example, a personal foul is not reviewable. Previously, roughing the passer fell under that category, but may be changed for the upcoming NFL season.

Many defensive linemen haven't quite figured out how to adjust to the new application of that rule. It also does put them in a difficult spot in many pass-rushing scenarios.

Potentially, this could give them a bit of a reprieve, but it's unclear if it will cost the team a challenge or how the replays will work. Regardless, a change is very possibly coming.

Will the NFL change the rules for roughing the passer?

All rule changes in the league have to be agreed upon before implementation. That means that if enough owners agree to change the rule, it'll change. If they don't, that rule stays that way.

It is very likely that the owners will agree. Generally speaking, no one likes to see a defensive lineman flagged for sacking a quarterback who released the ball 0.1 seconds prior. It can help an offensive team, but it's certainly a double-edged sword.

That makes it all the more likely that owners, most of whom's teams have been victimized by a questionable roughing the passer call at some point, will agree to at least make it reviewable. Refs can make mistakes, but they need to be corrected where possible.
