This week at the NFL Scouting Combine, draft candidates have taken to the field, with several of them running the 40-yard dash. While prospects aren't always competing against one another, being the quickest at the task is incredibly important when organizations closely monitor your every action.
The 40-yard dash, just as it sounds, tasks the participants to begin in a track position and sprint 40 yards as quickly as possible.
It is a popular event that is sometimes regarded as the highlight of the NFL Combine and always provides something for spectators, whether it be the wide receivers' quickness or the heavyweight offensive and defensive linemen's incredible agility.

NFL Combine all-time 40-yard records
The NFL Combine record for the 40-yard dash belongs to John Ross. In 2017, the wideout broke Chris Johnson of East Carolina's nine-year mark after sprinting to a charging 4.22 seconds. By clocking a time of 4.23 seconds, Baylor defensive back Kalon Barnes narrowly missed Ross' time from last year's combine.
Considering the introduction of electronic timing in 1999, just four players have clocked times in under 4.25 seconds:
- WR John Ross – 2017: 4.22 seconds
- CB Kalon Barnes – 2022: 4.23 seconds
- RB Chris Johnson – 2008: 4.23 seconds
- WR Rondel Menendez – 1999: 4.24 seconds
