Three key events to watch out for

Here are three significant events that NFL fans should pay attention to ahead of the Combine's start.

1. The 40-yard dash

No event is as followed and heralded as the 40-yard dash, which trends every NFL Combine. The 40-yard dash involves prospects going full speed over the 40-yard sprint and pushing themselves to the max. This drill is essential for wide receivers, as they are required to be downfield playmakers. The faster a player is, the more chances of them getting behind the defense.

Asides from wide receivers, defensive backs are required to put up decent 40-yard dashes, as they are tasked with keeping up with NFL-caliber receivers over the regular and postseason. Hence, the 40 times of corners and safeties are heavily scrutinized, and those that run slow 40 times often tumble down draft boards.

Over the years, we've seen some incredible 40-yard dashes, such as Christian Watson, DeVonta Smith, and Ja'Marr Chase. Remember that infamous 40-yard performance from the GOAT, Tom Brady, back in the 2000 NFL Combine.

2. The Three-cone Drill

The actual test of agility, the three-cone drill, is a leveler and proof of a prospect's skill in a game scenario. The player will run a straight line between the first cone and the second cone before looping around the second and third cones as quickly as possible.

This event shows how quickly players can change directions, accelerate, and bend while rounding each cone. These skills are critical for receivers, as players with quicker feet are often better route runners.

The players closely monitored in this event are edge rushers and other defensive prospects. Also, offensive tackles are known to thrive in this drill. Pay close attention to these positions heading into the three-cone training at the 2023 NFL Combine.

3. The Vertical jump

The vertical jump is one NFL Combine drill that gives peak NBA vibes. For obvious reasons, the vertical jump is typically associated with receivers, cornerbacks, and tight ends. These positions require players to jump over defenders to make highlight reel catches.

However, solid vertical jumps are handy for running backs and offensive and defensive linemen. Running backs need to explode to hit the hole, which relies a lot on leg strength, while the linemen, especially on defense, want to be quick and powerful off the snap.

This will be fun, as you'll see remarkable performances from NFL prospects with basketball backgrounds and some not-so-impressive performances from the less athletic prospects.
