Foles started the 2017 NFL season as Carson Wentz's backup. Wentz had an MVP-caliber season but suffered an ACL injury which sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign. As the Eagles' stand-in starter, Foles was phenomenal in the remaining regular season games, as well as in the postseason.
Foles made one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history, as he caught the touchdown pass of the "Philly Special" play. He became the first backup QB to win the Super Bowl since Tom Brady in 2001 with the Patriots.
Philadelphia Eagles chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie spoke about the decision to let Foles retire with the team.
"Nick Foles always carried himself with the utmost class and integrity, exhibiting through his actions, both on and off the field, what it meant to be a Philadelphia Eagle."
He was the ultimate competitor, an inspiring teammate, a true example of our city, and a Super Bowl Champion. As important as he was under center, his cheerful demeanor, approachability, and compassion toward others resonated with everyone and continue to speak to his excellent character. We congratulate the Foles family on Nick's celebrated career and retirement," Lurie said.
In addition to his time in Philadelphia, Foles played for the St. Louis Rams (now LA Rams), Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears, and Indianapolis Colts. He has a career stat line of 14,227 passing yards, 82 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions in 71 regular season games.
