Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff could have met at Super Bowl LVIII last season. It would have been a beautiful tale between their respective teams - the current overlords of the NFL against one of the greatest turnaround stories in the league's recent history.

That meeting can still happen in 2024. Both the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions are at 12-1, assured of at least a wildcard spot - although both would like to aim higher and go for the top seed and corresponding bye to the Divisional Round.

There exists a divide between the Kansas City Chiefs' record and Patrick Mahomes' performance. Despite the aforementioned 12-1 record, he is on track to have his least prolific passing season since he became the starter.

With 3,189 yards so far and only 20 passing touchdowns – meaning only a QB16 according to the Sportskeeda rankings. He is also a 200-point scorer going up against a Cleveland Browns team that is barely in the top half when containing quarterbacks – 15th place with 16.34 points allowed – despite having the reigning Defensive Player of the Year in Myles Garrett.

Dominant.

That is what Jared Goff has become during his tenure in Detroit lately. While he is also unlikely to hit 4,000 yards this season, he has already set career highs in completion percentage, passer rating and yards per game; and looks likely to throw 30 touchdowns for the second straight time.

Standing in the QB14's way, however, is a team that is adept at forcing bad games out of quarterbacks: the Buffalo Bills. Their defense, which has allowed a fourth-best 14.42 points against passers, has a monstrous arsenal of players who can do that: pass rushers Greg Rousseau and AJ Epenesa, play-stopping linebackers Dorian Williams and Terrel Bernard and the most dominant secondary in the AFC East.
