Most fans know Patrick Mahomes as arguably the NFL's best quarterback today, but he is an athletically gifted man with the ability to excel in any professional sport. He attended Whitehouse (Texas) High School, graduating in 2014, where he played football, baseball and basketball.
Before becoming the Super Bowl-winning QB, Mahomes had a fan from his high school days: Spencer Shaw, a friend and teammate on the school basketball team. On X on Feb. 2, 2020, Shaw posted a picture from his high school yearbook predicting Mahomes’ future.
“Seeing Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl ring,” the yearbook message read.

“When you predicted @PatrickMahomes would win the Super Bowl all the way back when y’all were in high school,” Shaw tweeted.
Patrick Mahomes had that 'it' factor to succeed
Patrick Mahomes’ childhood friend and basketball teammate Spencer Shaw was later interviewed by CNN in February 2020 about his incredibly accurate prediction.
“Drafted in the top 10, winning MVP in his first starting season, then the Super Bowl in his second starting season — I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted that,” Shaw told CNN. “But knowing him, having that ‘it’ factor, you just kind of knew he was going to succeed.”
When Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl win in decades on Feb. 2, 2020, many were ecstatic. Kansas City beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 after mounting a comeback from a double-digit deficit. But this was only a glimpse of what was to come.
Interestingly, the rookie QB was only in his second season as a regular starter. A year prior, he led the Chiefs to their first AFC championship game in decades. Although the Chiefs lost that game to the Cincinnati Bengals, Mahomes had a promising start, winning the first NFL MVP award in the franchise’s history.
He promised a better performance against the Bengals and delivered by beating them in 2020 for a Super Bowl spot. It was the perfect start to any rookie QB’s career. Mahomes isn’t just lucky; the three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP is extraordinarily talented.
Patrick Mahomes will excel at any sport that he plays
Praising his friend’s abilities, Spencer Shaw explained that he was always confident in Patrick Mahomes’ potential. The sport didn’t matter — the son of former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes would do well.
“He was the type where it didn’t matter what sport he played, he was going to excel at it,” Shaw said.
Mahomes was exceptionally skilled in baseball, good enough to be drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014 after his senior season and be a relief pitcher as a freshman at Texas Tech. In high school, he was also a regular on the school basketball team. Surprisingly, Mahomes became a starting QB in his senior year of high school and later chose football over baseball almost by chance.
