Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is looking on course for another Super Bowl appearance. One of the key factors behind his success is his physical fitness.

Mahomes is 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, a decent size for NFL QBs, and is strongly built, which is not surprising considering his father’s athletic prowess. It also explains why Mahomes has always been so good at multiple sports, including basketball, baseball and football, from a young age.

However, the 29-year-old QB is a hard worker as well. So, when he was interviewed by GQ Sports in July 2020, he revealed his in-season and off-season training regime, and there was a striking contrast between the two.

“I believe during the season, it’s all about maintaining (and) injury prevention, so I do two, three workouts a week. And it’s all about keeping that strength, keeping that mobility, and keeping all those things ready so that you go out there and can perform at your best,” Mahomes explained regarding his in-season program.

Mahomes is considered one of the least injury-prone athletes in the game. As per Draft Sharks, he has an injury risk at just 11.4% in 2024 with a 0.7% chance of injury per game.

In the above-mentioned interview with GQ, the Chiefs QB also discussed his off-season training routine.

“And then off-season, it’s all about—I start off the off-season kind of building, and then I try to cut down for the season. I try to get some muscle on me, get bigger, lift a little bit heavier, and then as I get closer to the season, I cut down and try to get myself prepared to go through the season and be at my best.”

Mahomes then rolled the viewers back into his off-season regime in the interview as the video showcased him practicing single-leg jumps for strengthening. But his off-season training sessions aren’t just about workouts, they involve more.

Patrick Mahomes invites whole offensive squad at home in Texas

Interestingly, Mahomes spends a major part of his off-season time at his home in Texas with his wife, Brittany, his kids, and his offensive teammates. He has a practice football field in his backyard where he invites all of his offensive squad for some sessions.

Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated reported in July 2023 that Mahomes contacted Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid and OC Eric Bieniemy with the idea. Mahomes didn’t want to just hold informal workouts but lead phase 1 of the program to teach and bond with his team.

He continued the program in 2024 as well, a few hundred miles away from Kansas, in his offseason home near Dallas, Texas. In an interview with ESPN in April last year, Mahomes informed that building relationships with his guys is the most enjoyable part of the sessions for him.

As of now, things seem to be working really well for the three-time Super Bowl champion.
