Puka Nacua has had a more subdued performance as a sophomore. After explosively setting multiple rookie records last season, he went down with an injury in the first game of 2024 and did not return until well after the bye week.

But since then, he has shown flashes of his past dominant self, exploding for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns last time out against the Buffalo Bills. And the Los Angeles Rams will need that man to reemerge if they are to make the playoffs again.

The final stretch to do so began at the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. Pitted against the likes of Charvarius Ward, how did Nacua fare?

Puka Nacua's stats on Thursday against 49ers

These are the numbers that Puka Nacua mustered in the game:

  • Receptions: 7
  • Receiving yards: 97
  • Rushing attempts: 2
  • Rushing yards: 11

In a game marked by multiple punts (including eight straight across the first and quarters) and field goals, he was easily its best receiver. In fact, he was one of only two men to hit even at least 100 scrimmage yards, the other being Kyren Williams (108 rushing and 4 receiving).

His biggest play was easily this 41-yard catch that he made while pinning the ball onto the helmet of Charvarius Ward:

It was a rare highlight in what was mostly a showcase of offensive ineptitude, with both teams coming inside the red zone yet not getting close enough to score a touchdown.

To put this sheer disparity into further context, Nacus had more receiving yards than the players behind him combined:

  • Colby Parkinson - 21
  • Hunter Long - 17
  • Blake Corum - 15
  • Tutu Atwell - 6
  • Kyren Williams - 4

And that is not to mention Cooper Kupp and Demarcus Robinson, neither of whom caught any of the four targets thrown their way.

The true MVP’s of the game, however, were on defense and special teams: cornerback Darious Williams (the interception that led to the game-sealing field goal) kicker Joshua Karty (four field goals, including the game-sealer with under 20 seconds left), and punter Ethan Evans (six punts for 325 yards, two inside the 20).
