Sherman was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and graduated from Stanford University in 2010 with an undergraduate degree in communications.

Richard Sherman plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). Waddle's professional career started in the year 2011 when he was selected by the Seahawks in the fifth round of the NFL draft 2011.

In 2011 after joining the Seattle Seahawks he signed a deal with them for four years of worth $2.22 million. In the 2011 season in a match against the San Francisco 49ers, he made his official NFL debut where in the following match he made his first professional solo tackle. In a game against the Arizona Cardinals, he had a career altering overall performance and in the following game, he recorded six solo tackles, a pass deflection, and an interception. Sherman was able to continue his dominant performance throughout the entire season and he finished his debut season with 55 combined tackles, 14 bypass deflections, 4 interceptions, and a forced fumble in sixteen games. Sherman quickly made himself into a game changing factor in the Seahawks by continuing his dominance in the upcoming seasons where in the 2014 season he was voted to his first Pro Bowl.

After having Career altering season in 2014 Sherman signed a new contract extension deal with the Seahawks for four more years of well worth $56 million. In the year 2018, Sherman signed a deal of three years worth $39 million with the San Francisco 49ers. In 2019 he scored his first interception and touchdown as a member of the 49ers in a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2020, Sherman was placed on the injured reserve list due to a calf injury. In 2023 he signed a deal of one year worth $2.25 million with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
