Ronnie Hillman started playing organized football while he was a student at La Habra High School. He earned numerus awards while in high school and was considered to be a three-star recruit by most recruiting analysts. This ranking, coupled with his strong showings in the 2008 Freeway League championship, earned him scholarship offers from Colorado State, San Diego State, and Fresno State.

He eventually chose San Diego State University, as the opportunity to play for the Aztecs was way too big a chance to pass up. Moreover, he did not have to travel too far from home to attend college. At San Diego State University, he was quite the NFL prospect, as he balled out in the NCAA tournament.

Ronnie Hillman closed out his college career with 573 rush attempts, 3,243 rushing yards, and 36 rushing touchdowns in two full seasons as a member of the Aztecs.
