The Dallas Cowboys could hire ex-Chicago Bears head coach, Matt Eberflus, for the defensive coordinator position, according to NFL insider Jane Slater. If Jerry Jones ends up signing Eberflus, it will be the first addition to new head coach, Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching staff.

“A source informed tells me the Cowboys have not completed the process of hiring their defensive coordinator. Matt Eberflus is certainly someone held in high regard and certainly part of the consideration," Slater reported.

Interestingly, he also reported that Jason Witten, who has been long associated with Jones' team, will not be joining Schottenheimer's staff anytime soon.

"Not part of their considerations, according to two sources, is Jason Witten on staff. While Jerry Jones has maintained a relationship with him, and they have talked in recent months, it appears my sense of him being part of the plan is unsubstantiated at this point and hasn’t been discussed, in fact,” Slater added.

The NFL Network insider also compared Matt Eberflus's 2024 defensive strategy to Eagles DC, Vic Fangio and former Jets coach, Robert Saleh.

"And for those who don’t like the idea of Matt Eberflus as DC which I believe will eventually come to pass check out his 2024 defense compared to Fangio and Saleh this season," Slater wrote.

Previously, Matt Eberflus worked as the Cowboys' linebackers coach from 2011 to 2017. Moreover, he also served in the role of passing game coordinator for two years.

Matt Eberflus can build strong and disciplined defenses in Dallas Cowboys

Matt Eberflus' time in Chicago was marked by a poor 14–32 record. It started with dreams of making it to the playoffs but the season ended after losing to the Detroit Lions. This exit led to his firing.

For Dallas, Eberflus could be a good fit.

With players like Micah Parsons leading the defense, the Cowboys have the talent to succeed. However, they need a coach who can make them perform consistently.

That is where Eberflus comes in and fixes their defensive struggles.

As Brian Schottenheimer starts his role as head coach, there is pressure to make the right choice for the defensive coordinator. Dallas’ defense was one of the worst in 2024.
