Robert Saleh was released from his head coaching duties with the New York Jets in October. He is now a consultant for the Green Bay Packers. On Wednesday, ESPN's Dan Graziano reported that Saleh is a top candidate for the San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator position.

His former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, once hoped to play for the 49ers. Rodgers, a Northern California native, expected to be drafted by the 49ers, but they chose quarterback Alex Smith instead.

"A few people I've talked to expect former Jets head coach (and former 49ers defensive coordinator) Robert Saleh to be the favorite to land back in San Francisco to fill their open defensive coordinator position," Graziano wrote on ESPN.

Saleh was the defensive coordinator in San Francisco from 2017 to 2020.

San Francisco parted ways with Nick Sorensen, who had served as the defensive coordinator. While the 49ers are open to welcoming Saleh back, he is also reportedly open to a head coaching role and will explore those options before accepting a coordinator role.

Robert Saleh set to interview for Jaguars HC role

On Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced a list of eight coaches they would like to interview to be their next head coach. Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is one of the eight requested.

This will be the first head coaching opportunity that Saleh has interviewed for since being fired by the Jets earlier in the 2024 season. Saleh's record as the New York Jets head coach was just 20-36. The Jaguars had a 22-29 record under Doug Pederson, who was fired earlier this week.

It's unclear when Saleh will have an interview with the Jaguars as he is busy helping the Green Bay Packers prepare for the wild card round. The Packers will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles this weekend.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur hired Saleh shortly after his departure from New York. He is a consultant who works with the Packers offense.
