NFL Trade Rumors: Why hasn’t a team signed Cam Newton yet?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Carolina Panthers
Cam Newton is a free agent at the moment

Seven weeks of the 2022 NFL season are officially complete and what a wild start it has been! For example, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are just 3-4 on the season and Matt Ryan was just benched by the Indianapolis Colts.

Another surprise is that former Carolina Panthers' first overall draft pick, quarterback Cam Newton, is still a free agent.

Newton was released by the New England Patriots before the start of the 2021 season. The Panthers brought him back in November 2021, where he remained for the rest of the season, splitting the starting job with PJ Walker.

Newton is yet to step onto the football field since then. With the injuries and overall setbacks with quarterbacks across the league, one is to wonder why Newton is yet to sign.

Although an obvious option, the Carolina Panthers, who have both Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield out with injuries, could repeat last season and sign Newton as added depth.

Back in March, NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that there were NFL teams interested in signing Newton but that he was waiting for the best opportunity.

“I have teams that are interested in signing me. I am waiting on the best fit as it pertains to winning a championship and getting a fair chance to play.”

At this point in the season, there aren't many teams that are both in need of a quarterback and are in a position to make a Super Bowl run.

However, with Newton's experience, he would be a viable asset to add to any team. In the meantime, Newton has continued to create content for his Funky Friday podcast that can be viewed on YouTube.

NFL Trade Deadline

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 4:00 PM EST. In order for a trade to become official, the details of the trade as well as the filing paperwork have to be at the league offices no later than 4:00 PM.

Most trades, however, are made in advance of the deadline and there isn't typically a frenzy at the deadline like there are in others sports.

After that date, no trades will be allowed in the National Football League until after the new league year begins, which isn't until March 15, 2023, at 4:00 PM EST. That isn't to say that teams won't discuss trades in the offseason before that date, but the transaction won't become official until the new league year begins.
