It was the second consecutive week that the Steelers started Russell Wilson and he had to navigate a New York team again, with the Giants following the Jets. The Monday Night Football game was the concluding matchup for Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season and it had gone well so far for Pittsburgh.
The Ravens were upset by the Browns, with the Steelers going atop the AFC North by default. They needed to win against a Giants team that has struggled throughout the season knowing that they would go one game ahead of Baltimore in their division if they did.
Russell Wilson was crucial to the plan and he executed it to a high degree right from the very start. However, Pittsburgh did not see immediate results as there were a couple of missed passes in the first half, followed by a couple of touchdowns that were called back due to penalties or rule interpretations.
In the second half, he made some deep throws that got the Steelers offense looking like a more coherent unit than it has in some time. Russell Wilson also got his first touchdown of the game after the break with a pinpoint pass to Calvin Austin, who earlier had scored himself on a punt return. Overall, this is how it went for the veteran quarterback.

When Russell Wilson was injured toward the start of the season, Justin Fields got the Steelers off to a good start. However, there was a feeling that the offense was stagnating and Mike Tomlin made the call to make the veteran the starter as soon as he was healthy.
The former Broncos quarterback had a lot to prove after his disastrous time in Denver and a very public falling-out with Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton, and he responded against the Jets with a winning performance. He continued in that vein at the beginning of the match against the Giants.
He was not afraid to throw the ball and got help from Najee Harris when appropriate. In the very first drive, he connected with George Pickens in the endzone but the play was called back due to a penalty in the offensive backfield. The quarterback did not let that rattle him as he led them to one more scoring drive, which yielded a field goal.
Russell Wilson would connect with George Pickens one more time with the same result, with the touchdown call reversed because he did not get both feet inbounds. One felt that the quarterback was feeling good and would get going in the second half.
That is what happened after a punt return touchdown gave them a lead after the break. The offense seemed liberated by being ahead and Russell Wilson connected with Van Jefferson on a third-and-long in a drive that eventually led to the first offensive touchdown of the game.
Their next drive came after the Giants had scored a touchdown of their own and Russell Wilson threw a magnificent deep ball to George Pickens to set up a first-and-goal. Even though it only yielded a field goal, it showed that the former Seahawks Super Bowl winner still has the range and accuracy of an elite quarterback.
Perhaps that is what made him a little overconfident toward the end of the fourth quarter when he took off on a run and fumbled the ball. That could have led to a game-tying touchdown drive by the Giants but T.J. Watt returned the favor with a strip sack of Daniel Jones to save his quarterback's blushes.
That gave the Steelers the ball again but Russell Wilson seemed to have lost a bit of his swagger as he failed to pick up the first down that would have ended the game. That gave New York a chance to tie the game with a touchdown and a two-point conversion, but they failed to do so with Daniel Jones getting intercepted. The new Pittsburgh starter had his second win on the bounce.
