Samuel Richard "Sam" Darnold is an American football quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL. The New York Jets selected him as the third overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. He started 13 games while recording 17 touchdowns, 2,865 yards and 15 interceptions in his rookie season. In 2021, in exchange for a sixth-round selection in 2021 and second and fourth-round picks in 2022, he was traded to the Carolina Panthers. With the Panthers, he recorded a total of 16 touchdowns in two seasons. In 2023, he signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Following that, in March 2024, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings.
Darnold decided to play college football at the University of Southern California. At USC, Darnold redshirted for his freshman season. However, during the 2016 season, Darnold was named the Pac-12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year and also received the Archie Griffin Award in January 2017. After his impressive performance his junior season, Darnold was a strong contender for the Heisman Trophy for the 2017 season. For high school, Darnold attended San Clemente High School, where he played basketball as well.
