Samuel Richard Darnold is a professional American football player who plays as a quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL, as of 2024. The New York Jets selected Darnold with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. Darnold started 13 games in his first season and finished with 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. In addition to recording 33 receptions for 62 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, Darnold concluded the 2019 season with 3,024 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. In exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick and 2022 second and fourth-round picks, Darnold was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. In total, Darnold scored 16 touchdowns over his two seasons with the Panthers. In 2023, Darnold agreed to a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. After that, In March 2024, Darnold agreed to a one-year deal to play with the Minnesota Vikings.

Darnold attended the University of Southern California to play collegiate football. Even though he redshirted his freshman year at USC, Darnold was named the Pac-12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year in 2016 and received the Archie Griffin Award in January 2017. His performance during the previous season made him a strong contender for the 2017 Heisman Trophy. Darnold played football and basketball while he was a high school student at San Clemente High School.
