Sam Howell, who is the current starting quarterback for the Washington Commanders in the NFL, was drafted in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Howell was born to parents Duke and Amy Howell on September 16, 2000, in Waynesville, North Carolina. He spent all of his life in North Carolina as he attended Sun Valley High School and the University of North Carolina (UNC).

In high school, Howell had an amazing journey as the quarterback of the school’s football team. He finished his high school football career with 13,415 yards and 145 touchdowns as well as adding another 3,621 yards and 60 touchdowns on the ground.

At UNC, Howell was the starting signal caller from his freshman season onwards, and in three years with the Tar Heels, he passed for over 10,000 yards, 92 touchdowns, and just 23 interceptions. He had a passer rating of 164.2.

In 2022, Howell spent his rookie season on the bench only getting to play in the final game of the season against the Dallas Cowboys. In the current 2023 NFL season, Howell has been the starter for the Washington Commanders and did a decent job in the initial games. As of now, the team will need to get better quickly and put more pieces together with their new quarterback.

Sam Howell 40 time

Howell did not run the 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL combine. However, he did run the 40 at his Pro Day and set a time of 5.07 seconds. His 40-yard dash was quite slow as the average for NFL quarterbacks is around 4.93.

Having said that, the fastest 40-time set by a quarterback is Michael Vick who ran it with a time of 4.33 seconds in 2001, and the slowest is recorded at around 5.37 seconds. Most quarterbacks however have a time under 5 seconds.

However, even though Howell’s 40 time may be slower than average, he showed a tremendous ability to run with the ball during his college days. He was a fairly decent dual-threat quarterback which goes to show that he has the ability to scramble out of the pocket if and when the need arises.

Sam Howell Height

Howell stands at 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) in height. As far as the NFL standard goes, Howell is more or less average in height. Being over 6 feet in the NFL for a quarterback has more advantages since shorter signal callers have their view obstructed by the taller offensive line and defensive players in front of them. It is especially difficult to get the best view for plays resulting further down the field and therefore a quarterback above 6 feet is generally considered to have good height to play in the NFL.

Sam Howell Weight

Howell weighs around 220 lb (100 kg) which is again around the average weight of an NFL quarterback. Signal callers who are under the average weight in the league are more prone to injury with bigger defenders coming full speed for sacks and tackles.

On the flip side, heavier quarterbacks could be limited in their ability to scramble and escape the pocket should the need arise. However, most of the quarterbacks that tend to be heavier than the standard 220 pounds are generally much taller as well around 6’5” or 6’6”.
