Trey Lance came into the 2022 NFL regular season poised to take over the reins at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Lance, fresh off beating Super Bowl-winning veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, was promised a breakout season right up until disaster struck in the first week. That's all it took to send Lance's breakout year into a tailspin, and we have not seen the fresh-faced North Dakota State alum take the Gridiron ever since.
Trey Lance remains on Injured Reserve heading into the wildcard weekend. It was reported that Lance underwent a procedure Friday to extract hardware from his right ankle that was placed in during the initial surgery in September. For San Francisco fans hoping to see him take to the Gridiron this postseason, it's a negative update. However, for casuals, it's a step in the right direction. With regards to San Francisco's starter for the wildcard weekend, you can expect Brock Purdy to keep his starting job.
Trey Lance's Fantasy Outlook
Heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, Trey Lance was seen as an early first-round pick. That was when the San Francisco 49ers selected him with the third overall pick. Lance spent his first season in San Francisco learning the ropes from two-time Super Bowl-winning backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo. He played in limited snaps in his rookie season, with the 49ers keen on starting him in his sophomore season. They did that until he was struck with an unfortunate ankle injury.

Lance underwent another surgery on his right ankle to remove the hardware inserted during the first surgery. This happened after he experienced irritation based on the location of the hardware. The 49ers won't be eager to rush Lance back to the Gridiron, as third-string QB Brock Purdy is doing a fantastic job in Lance's place.
How did Trey Lance perform this season?
Trey Lance's sophomore season was cut short in its infancy due to one of the more unfortunate injuries of the 2022 NFL regular season. He hurt his ankle in the week one game against the Chicago Bears and was promptly ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Before getting hurt, Lance put up a stat line of 194 passing yards, zero touchdowns and one interception in his sole appearance of the 2022 regular season. Jimmy Garoppolo replaced Lance in the aftermath of his ankle injury, and Garoppolo himself is presently dealing with his own injury issues.
