The Dolphins and the 49ers both played in the playoffs last year. Miami lost in the Wild Card round, whereas San Francisco went all the way to the Super Bowl. Their vanquishers in both cases were the Kansas City Chiefs.
If they were plotting revenge in 2024, time was running out for both teams. They came into this game with each sporting a losing 6-8 record. By the time the first drive got going, the 49ers were eliminated from playoff contention after the results went against them from earlier in the day.
The Dolphins are still in it, but barely. Both franchises can point to crucial injuries that have hampered this season. However, this was a chance to leave those issues behind and play for pride. Here is how the action played out.

49ers vs. Dolphins game summary
The two offenses showcased early on why their teams are currently in the predicament they are in. The two teams exchanged three punts to begin the first quarter before the Dolphins finally broke the deadlock with a field goal.
That was the spark that the 49ers needed to get going and they scored a touchdown to open the second quarter and go up 7-3. Deebo Samuel redeemed himself after the drop last week to take the ball into the endzone.
Miami responded with a drive that ended in another field goal to make the score 7-6. After their defense forced San Francisco to punt again, the Dolphins had their first touchdown on the next possession. Following a couple of good rushes, they found themselves in the red zone and Tua Tagovailoa connected with Tyreek Hill to surge into a 13-7 lead for the home team. It was also the quarterback's 100th career touchdown pass.
The 49ers managed to reduce that lead to 13-10 after scoring a field goal during the two-minute warning. Miami could not respond with 47 seconds remaining, and that is how it ended at the break.
Coming back after halftime, the Dolphins received the ball and scored on their first possession with another field goal, making the score 16-10. The 49ers had a chance to score one of their own on the next drive but Jake Moody missed the attempt. Miami would further their lead with another three points when they next had the ball.
The 49ers knew they needed to hit back on their next possession, and they did so at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Brock Purdy threw to tight end Eric Saubert to make the score 19-17. San Francisco's defense did its part the next time on the field and held the Dolphins to a punt. But Miami responded strongly and made the 49ers punt, too, before extending their lead to 22-17 after another field goal before the two-minute warning.
With three timeouts remaining, the 49ers would have wanted to go on a touchdown drive to end the game but Calais Campbell and Kader Kohou combined to come up with a takeaway. The defensive tackle flattened Brock Purdy and the cornerback came away with an interception. On the next drive, De'Von Achane went on a 50-yard run to score a touchdown, even though a slide to keep the clock running might have been better. That gave the home team a 29-17 lead.
It would turn out to be the final score too as Brock Purdy could not atone for his earlier pick and engineer a miracle on the next drive. San Francisco's offense turned the ball over on downs in the red zone with 10 seconds remaining and that signaled the game's end.
