Should I drop Gus Edwards? Week 14 Fantasy Projection for Chargers RB

Gus Edwards is a perfect microcosm of the current Los Angeles Chargers – a blend of two pasts. As a former Baltimore Raven who previously played under offensive coordinator Todd Monken, he was projected to be the "thunder" to JK Dobbins' "lightning", a dynamic running back tandem that perfectly complemented each other.

So far, however, the promise has not panned out. Edwards was the starter in Week 1, but gradually sidelined and eventually demoted as the weeks progressed. But now, with Dobbins on injured reserve with an MCL sprain, he could reestablish himself as a solid fallback option. Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine wrote:

"Edwards looked healthy when he had the ball... Giving [him] more of the offensive burden could at least help keep the defense off the field longer."

But is he? And should fantasy managers even consider having him?

There is a reason why Gus Edwards has not been a favorite amongst fantasy managers: he has been unproductive, failing to hit even 60 yards in every game. He has also proven to be injury-prone, missing the first four games of the Chargers' post-bye week stretch with an ankle injury.

The result: no double-digit fantasy point performances. He even failed to hit a flat one at the Pittsburgh Steelers, being neutralized by their monstrous defense. Still, he has proven too important to drop into the RB50s in this week's Sportskeeda rankings, instead sitting at RB23.

But any hopes of improvement will likely be dashed by the Kansas City Chefs, who are currently an impressive seventh when defending against running backs. Their unit has been holding opponents to an average of 15.8 fantasy points – good enough for ninth.

As a result, Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman will be leaning more toward the passing game. And they have good news on that front as the Chiefs are only middle of the pack in that regard, allowing 33.10 points against WRs and a shockingly regressed 31.7 against TEs – with only the Philadelphia Eagles coming off worse with 33.7.

Thus, Edwards is an easy choice to drop in Week 14.

Gus Edwards' fantasy outlook for the rest of 2024 season

As JK Dobbins continues to prove himself as an unsung hero for the Bolts with a good number of double-digit fantasy points showings despite not having hit 100 yards in a game since Week 2, Gus Edwards looks to be fading out of the limelight fast.

Large, imposing "thunder" backs are still necessary in the league despite the proliferation of their smaller and more agile "lightning" counterparts. After all, there are certain scenarios (short-yardage, red zone) where muscling through heavy-bodied front sevens is necessary.

But fantasy managers are usually better off with the likes of Derrick Henry and Brian Robinson Jr. instead of Edwards in that respect. Expect him to drop off to the 30s or even 40s once the season ends.
