Kareem Hunt was acquired midseason by the Kansas City Chiefs to become their starting running back following an injury to Isiah Pacheco.

In his second stint in Kansas City, the veteran back has been a solid performer for the 11-1 Chiefs, but with Pacheco now healthy, there is a question as to whether or not Hunt holds any fantasy value moving forward.

Last week, Pacheco returned to the Chiefs lineup for the first time since Week 2, splitting carries with Hunt. However, heading towards the fantasy football playoffs, Hunt owners are cautious about his playing time.

Kareem Hunt was picked up off the street by Kansas City after Isiah Pacheco suffered a fractured fibula as the team wasn't convinced that either Carson Steele or Samaje Perine could be the lead back in his absence.

On an adjusting offense that lost star WR Rashee Rice due to injury at a similar time, Hunt's veteran presence was vital for Kansas City as they kept winning games before falling to the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.

Even with Pacheco back, Hunt will still have some fantasy value as they ease Pacheco back into the lineup. With the Chiefs almost guaranteed a playoff spot, they may be tempted to keep Pacheco fresh for the NFL postseason and continue to pound the rock with Hunt. The end of the regular season coincides with fantasy football playoffs.

The Chiefs will be on the road in Week 14 to face the LA Chargers, who have a tough defense for QBs and RBs. Patrick Mahomes may need to rely on the ground game like he's done often this season.

Fantasy owners would be wise to hold onto Hunt for this reason, and he becomes especially valuable once again should Pacheco suffer an injury setback.

Kareem Hunt fantasy outlook for rest of 2024 season

Despite diminishing production over the past few weeks which saw Hunt fail to reach double-digit PPR points in two of his last three outings, he still has a role on a potent Chiefs offense.

Should Pacheco look like his old self immediately and handle the majority of the carries, Hunt may be droppable in some leagues as we enter the fantasy football playoffs.

However, Hunt is averaging 20.1 touches per game. He will likely play some role even with Pacheco healthy, and his touches could be in the high teens with a Pacheco injury setback.
