The Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals have emerged as AFC powers after the downfall of the New England Patriots dynasty.

The rivalry between the two is fierce, as depicted by their AFC championship encounters. Although Cincinnati will miss this season’s playoffs, the last encounter between the two teams with a Super Bowl on the line was a thriller on Jan. 29, 2023, that resulted in a 23-20 Kansas City victory.

Patrick Mahomes denies Joe Burrow an opportunity for his cigar celebration

After the close win, Patrick Mahomes's father, Pat Mahomes Sr., didn’t miss the chance to revel in his son’s success. He celebrated in his own unique way — or, more accurately, in Joe Burrow’s style — by sitting back casually and lighting a cigar during an interview with KSHB-TV.

“Smoking this Joe Burrow,” he said. “It feels great. My baby boy did what he always does. You know, he is going to show up and show out, and I’m just glad he did it.”

Pat Mahomes Sr. was humorously referencing Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who is known for his iconic cigar-smoking celebration.

Burrow typically sits back in a chair, relaxed, with one leg crossed over the other, lighting a cigar with his hair slicked back. It is reserved for major victories and dates back to his LSU national championship-winning days in 2019, when Jeffrey Marx captured Burrow in that now-famous pose.

The victory was meaningful for Chiefs fans and the Mahomes family, including Patrick’s wife, Brittany. In the Netflix documentary series "Quarterback," Mahomes revealed that he was eager to face the Bengals in the AFC championship game.

“I think we match up better versus the Bills, but I wanna play the Bengals,” Mahomes said. “I just wanna play ’em. We haven’t beat ’em. I’m tired of them talking.”

Patrick Mahomes takes his sweet revenge on the Cincinnati Bengals

The Chiefs faced their conference rival Bengals on Jan. 29, 2023, in the AFC championship game. The Chiefs won thanks to a late 45-yard field goal by Harrison Butker with just three seconds left on the clock.

Mahomes completed 29 of 43 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns, while Burrow completed 26 of 41 for 270 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Burrow struggled against the Chiefs’ defense, enduring five sacks.

This victory was sweet revenge for Mahomes and his team, as they had lost the AFC championship game 27-24 to the Bengals. Mahomes (26 of 39 for 275 yards and three TDs) had slightly outperformed Burrow (23 of 38 for 250 yards and two TDs) in that game.

However, this season they won’t be facing each other because the Bengals missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record.
