Spencer Sanders is a talented American football quarterback who was part of the Ole Miss Rebels football team in 2023. Born in Dallas, Texas, on December 15, 1999, Sanders has been playing college football for six years as of February 2024.

Standing at a height of 6’ 2”, Sanders is tall enough as the average NFL quarterback and also has the arm to make NFL-level plays. He can make off-balance throws but at times takes too long to complete his motion resulting in fewer yards after catch for his receivers. Even though Sanders has entered the 2024 NFL Draft, his chances of getting selected higher up have taken a serious hit.

At this point in early 2024, the story of Spencer Sanders seems to be a ‘what could have been situation’ since the talent is clearly there but a few bad decisions along the way have drastically reduced his draft stock. The biggest issue that has surfaced for Sanders is the limited to almost no game time that he received in 2023 after he decided to transfer in his last year of college.

Spencer Sanders College

Sanders decided to go to Oklahoma State University (OSU) for his higher education and to continue his football journey with the Oklahoma State Cowboys team. As a four-star recruit, Sanders had offers from several good football programs such as Ole Miss, North Carolina, Penn State, and more.

As a freshman in 2018, he redshirted that year and took the field in 2019 for the first time. From 2019 to 2022, Sanders spent the next four years perfecting his craft and compiled a 31-11 record over the years. Averaging over 2,000 passing yards each year, the Dallas native finished his career at OSU with 9,553 passing yards and another 1,956 yards on the ground which set an OSU school record for the most career rushing yards by a quarterback.

However, when all seemed to be going well for Sanders, he decided to transfer to Ole Miss in 2023 for his last year of college eligibility. That decision was met with a lot of criticism considering there was no place for a starting position on the Rebels football team. He ended up hardly featuring in any games in 2023 and wasted his entire year on the bench and with it, his draft stock has taken a huge hit.

Spencer Sanders High School

Sanders’ first action of competitive football came when he played on the Billy Ryan High School’s football team as a quarterback. Despite getting injured in his junior year of high school, he put up huge numbers that year as well as the subsequent year as a senior.

Along with his ability to throw the ball putting up over 3,000 and 3,500 yards in the air as a junior and a senior respectively, he also rushed for over 1,000 yards both years. Sanders also dominated the opposition with 35 touchdowns thrown and 18 touchdowns on the ground as a junior while taking it to the next level in his final year with 54 passing and 16 rushing touchdowns.

In 52 starts in his high school career, Sanders led his school to a 46-6 record. His dominant display under center earned him accolades such as the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Texas and the Associated Press Player of the Year.
