He completed his high school education from Out Lady of Good Counsel High School, though he played track alongside football then and won several awards for his performance then, including the 2011 MVP of the U.S. Army All-American Junior Combine. After graduation, as a five-star recruit, he chose the University of Maryland out of offers from Auburn, USC, and Ohio State, among others.

Over the course of three seasons with the Terrapins, he totaled 187 carries for 187 rushing yards and 150 receptions for 2,227 yards and 14 touchdowns. Following which, he participated in the 2015 NFL Draft and was the fifth-round #146 pick by the Minnesota Vikings. He played four seasons with them before being traded to the Buffalo Bills in 2020, during which he went to four Pro Bowls consecutively, and finally again being traded to the Texans in April 2024.
