The Super Bowl event is one of the most anticipated sports events in the United States. It involves two of the best teams from their respective conferences, face-off against each other. The winner of the Super Bowl LVIII will receive the prestigious Vince Lombardi Trophy, and Super Bowl rings. The first Super Bowl which took place at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles on January 15, 1967, was won by the Green Bay Packers over the Kansas City Chiefs. It was the first-ever AFC vs NFL World Championship, which was later known as Super Bowl I. The game was made as part of the merger agreement between the NFL and the American Football League to compete best teams from both conferences for a championship. In 1970, when the merger was completed, 10 of the AFL teams and 3 of the NFL teams formed the AFC (American Football Conference) and the rest of the 13 NFL teams formed the National Football Conference).

As of 2025, the NFL has a total of 32 teams. Out of the 32 teams, only 20 teams have won a Super Bowl and 15 teams have won multiple titles. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots have won the most Super Bowls out of any of the other franchises with 6 each. The Patriots have had the most appearances in the Super Bowl with 11. The Super Bowl LIX will be the 59th edition of the contest and the Kansas City Chiefs will be facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 9th, 2025.

The reason for the Super Bowl being on Sunday

The main reason for the Super Bowl being on Sunday is because of the television ratings. When Kyle Brandt pitched the idea of Super Bowls being conducted on Saturdays on "The Kyle Brandt Football Experience", NFL’s Commissioner Roger Goodell said “Basically, it comes down to one main thing and that main thing is television ratings. Goodell continued, "That [idea] has been around for a long time, people have talked about that,". The commissioner further added, "The reason we haven't done it in the past is simply just from an audience standpoint. The audiences on Sunday night are so much larger. Fans want to have the best opportunity to be able to see the game and we want to give that to them, so Sunday night is a better night." (as reported by CBS Sports).

Is the Super Bowl always on a Sunday?

The Super Bowl has always been played on a Sunday since 1967 when the first championship was held. And since 2022, Super Bowls are played on the second Sunday in February every year. As mentioned earlier, the reason is largely due to TV ratings and also because Sunday is a holiday when all the families gather around to watch TV.
