In Teddy Bridgewater, we have a prime example of what hard luck in sports is all about. Here is a player who has faced a roller coaster ride but with more downs than ups. As a matter of fact, his string of bad luck started much before he even played a game in the NFL.
Way back in 2008 when playing for his high school as a starting quarterback, he led the team in the Florida 6A State Championship game where they were up 21-0 and let the game slip away just seconds before the final whistle. This was the start of Bridgewater’s bad luck which was going to daunt him throughout his career.
In the NFL, despite putting up good numbers in college, he was in a 2014 draft class that had potentially better players ahead of him, as a result of which he slid to the last pick of the first round and went to the terrible Minnesota Vikings team from the previous year. Somehow marshaling the team into the postseason, the Vikings were one field goal away from advancing to the Divisional round but only for the kicker to miss it.
Fast forward to 2014, Bridgewater got severely injured on a non-contact play and that too during the last practice before the preseason. It was later revealed that he tore his ACL, dislocated his knee, and also suffered other structural damage. As per the doctors' analysis, his leg had become extremely brittle and his knee was completely mangled. And unfortunately for Teddy, his career was always on a downward slide after that.
Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback
Bridgewater as a quarterback is known to be a smart decision making player at the heart of an offense. Despite his lack of arm strength, his high football IQ is what helps him achieve success on the field. Add to that his desire to compete to his best potential and with a drive to succeed the former Vikings quarterback has the correct approach towards the game.
Bridgewater’s skills are also apparent in his excellent footwork and ability to throw passes to open up receivers. Bridgewater is also one of those quarterbacks with good pocket presence allowing him to escape dangerous situations more often than not. However, some drawbacks in his game are his lack of size, pure arm strength, and inability to scramble much.
Which team is Teddy Bridgewater on currently
After the 2022 season came to an end, Bridgewater did not get a contract extension from the Dolphins resulting in the fourth free agency of his career. Just recently, on August 10, 2023, Bridgewater signed a new one year deal this time with the Detroit Lions where he will serve as the backup to Jared Goff. With age still on his side, Bridgewater has the chance of mounting a comeback in the league but the time is quietly ticking away. Should he get another worthy chance, the onus will be on him to make the best of it.
How many teams has Teddy Bridgewater played for
Teddy Brigewater’s NFL career started with the Minnesota Vikings in 2014. Leading a team with the worst record the previous season to a 6-6 record in his 12 starts as a rookie, Bridgewater quickly found his footing in year 2. He was the catalyst in taking the team to the playoffs where they would narrowly lose in the Wild Card round to the Seattle Seahawks with a score of 9-10. Missing out the next two years of his career due to a horrific knee injury before the start of the 2016 season, he made a comeback towards the end of the 2017 season for a couple of plays in a week 15 game.
The Vikings then decided against extending his contract so he signed a one year deal with the New York Jets. Technically though, he never played for the Jets, as they took rookie Sam Darnold in that year’s draft making him the starter and traded him to the New Orleans Saints.
Bridgewater spent two seasons with the Saints but he spent his time as the backup to Drew Brees. In 2020, he signed a three year deal with the Carolina Panthers where he earned the starting job. Despite having a good set of receivers and an excellent running back in Christian McCaffrey, the Panthers just couldn’t win games. Before the start of the 2021 season, Bridgewater again lost his job to Sam Darnold and he was traded to the Denver Broncos.
In Denver, Bridgewater got to start 14 games before getting a concussion. But in his 14 games, his record was 7-7 and he again failed to get an extension. In the past year, Bridgewater, again a free agent, signed another one year deal with the Miami Dolphins to backup starter Tua Tagovailoa.
