One name definitely included in the list of greatest wide receivers of all time is without a doubt, Terrell Owens. A big fan of Jerry Rice, he did not start for his high school team until an illness forced him to during his junior year. At Chattanooga, Owens was a tri-sport athlete: in football, basketball, and track. One of the few athletes to play in the NCAA tournament for all three sports, he saw success at each level. In basketball, he played in the 1995 NCAA tournament. For his football career, his junior and senior years saw him make the NCAA, while he led the team to an NCAA Championship in the 4 x 100 relay.

Coming in from the FCS, Owens wasn't highly projected in the NFL. As a result, he dropped to the 3rd round, where the San Francisco 49ers selected him with the 89th overall pick. He was joining a team already boasting his childhood hero, Jerry Rice, as a backup. A torn ACL to Rice in 1997, however, put the 49ers in a delicate spot. But they were able to respond and Owens, along with quarterback, Young, helped the team win 13 games. The following season, Owens recorded his first 1000-yard year. His strong play continued in the playoffs as despite missing multiple passes, Repeated throws by Young led to Terrell redeeming himself with a game-winning touchdown pass. His numbers were mediocre the next year as a result of quarterback Young retiring due to a concussion. However, he came back the next year with a record-breaking performance in which he surpassed the 50-year mark held by Tom Fears for most receptions. His phenomenal play led to his first Pro Bowl, as well as first-team All-Pro selection. Over the next two years, his final years with San Francisco, Owens would be named to the Pro Bowl and the first-team All-Pro both times. Despite leading the NFL in receiving touchdowns in two of the last three years, Owens had a long, drawn-out, controversial divorce with the 49ers. Eventually, he made his way over to the Philadelphia Eagles where he would enjoy a two-year stint.
