The current Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles is a vastly experienced professional in the league. Not only has Bowles been a coach at various positions for several teams in the NFL, but he is also a former player who played safety for 8 seasons. After the 2021 season came to an end, former Bucs coach Bruce Arians decided to step away from coaching and step into the front office role. Arians' decision to leave the head coaching job opened the doors for Todd Bowles to take up the mantle.
The promotion of Todd Bowles from his earlier position of defensive coordinator to head coach is understandable given the plethora of experience he has not just in coaching but as a former player as well. He has seen the game evolve from the field itself and his knowledge from that regard is unmatched. Having just announced Baker Mayfield as QB1 for the upcoming 2023 season, both the team and the struggling quarterback have a lot to prove. Entering his second year as the head coach in Tampa, Bowles doesn’t need any drastic changes to take place, but steady improvement will be the key forward.

After taking a hiatus from the game from 1993 to 1996, Bowles started his career as a coach. His first proper coaching job was with Morehouse College in Atlanta. He was named the team’s Defensive coordinator & secondary coach. After just a lone season in Atlanta, he was given the same responsibilities at Grambling State College in Louisiana.
At the turn of the millennium, Bowles got his first big break when the New York Jets gave him his first NFL coaching opportunity as the team’s secondary coach. He then continued in the same role with the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys for the next few years before the Miami Dolphins made him the assistant head coach along with the secondary coach from 2008 to 2011.
The 2011 season was a big one for Bowles since he finally got his first ever head coach role with the Dolphins albeit it was an interim one. 2012 again saw him back to his secondary coach duties but this time with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was also made the interim defensive coordinator later that year and this paved his way ahead.
The following year the Arizona Cardinals approached Bowles for the role of defensive coordinator for a couple of years. In 2014 his efforts in shaping the Cardinals' defense didn’t go unnoticed and Bowles was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
In 2015, the former safety finally earned his first ever head coach job which lasted for four seasons with the New York Jets. With his tenure in the Big Apple coming to an end, he was approached by the Buccaneers for the defensive coordinator position once again, following which he earned the head coach job in 2022.
What is Todd Bowles' record as a head coach?
At present, Todd Bowles' head coach record does not look too good. He has lost more than 1.5 times the number of games he has won. Starting off as an interim head coach in Miami, Bowles finished 2-1 in his three games.
With the Jets, Bowles had a four-year career but his record was only 24-40 with his best season being his first as the Jets coach where they won 10 of 16 games. Last year, the Bucs went 8-9 and he actually made his first playoff appearance as a head coach but lost in the Wild Card Round to the Dallas Cowboys.
The battle to turn around his record is a very difficult one for Bowles but not an impossible one. If he can put together a couple of good winning seasons then the lopsided record will start to even out.
