Tommy Townsend is an American football Punter, currently playing for the Houston Texans in the National Football League. Townsend, who was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2020 played the first four years of his career in Kansas City before joining the Texans on March 15, 2024.
Despite not being selected in the draft, he showcased brilliance on the field, concluding his rookie season with 52 punts for 2,339 net yards, averaging 44.98 average. His outstanding performance led him to secure a spot on the 2020 PFWA All-Rookie team.
During the 2021 season, he once again earned recognition for his performance but was later placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. However, he was reactivated and concluded his season with 37 punts for 1,746 net yards, averaging 47.19. The 2022 season proved to be a turning point in his career; he concluded the season with 53 punts for 2,672 net yards, averaging 50.42. His performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection, and notably, he won Super Bowl LVII with the team. During the Super Bowl, he punted twice for 98 yards, which culminated in a 38–35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Furthermore, he concluded the 2023 regular season with 59 punts for 2,776 net yards, averaging 47.10 and was a key member of the Chiefs back-to-back Super Bowl runs.
Townsend's football journey started long before entering the league. While growing up, he attended William Rennick Boone High School, where he developed an intense passion for football while playing on the high school football team. After completing high school, he attended the University of Tennessee and further honed his skills and expertise by playing college football for the University of Florida.

Initially, Townsend attended the University of Tennessee as a freshman and later transferred to the University of Florida. In 2015, at Tennessee, he participated in the football team as a freshman, however, he did not play in any of the games.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, Townsend had to sit out the 2016 season at the University of Florida. Unfortunately, he did not participate in any games during the 2017 season either.
As a junior, he concluded the 2018 season with 51 punts for 2,315 yards, averaging 45.4. His performance earned him a spot on the Second Team All-SEC and a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Furthermore, he was one of the semi-finalists for the Ray Guy Award.
He concluded his final season at Florida with 42 punts for 1,847 yards, averaging 44. Similar to his junior season, he finished as the semi-finalist for the Ray Guy Award.
