Interceptions are very dangerous as they let the other team gain possession, usually deep within a team's territory, and can result in points for the opposing unit.
Given some of these players' pedigree in the league, most people will be surprised to learn who led the NFL in interceptions during the 2024 regular season, which concluded last Sunday.
Here, we will take a look at the top 10 players in this category as playoff football draws nearer.
Most INTs thrown in the 2024 NFL regular season

Bo Nix, who was selected as the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has been impressive in his rookie season. However, he has experienced some difficulties with interceptions.
The 24-year-old quarterback threw two interceptions in his NFL debut against the Seattle Seahawks. In Week 15, Nix recorded three interceptions despite also throwing for three touchdowns against the Indianapolis Colts.
After that game, the quarterback indicated that he hopes to keep errors low and wants to strive to be more consistent.
Bo Nix has performed admirably as a rookie overall. Having guided Denver to its first postseason spot since 2015, he has fulfilled expectations and may have even performed marginally better than anticipated thus far.
#9 C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans - 12 INTs
C.J. Stroud led the league in both passing yards per game and touchdowns to interceptions (23-5) last season. This season, though, it's a different story for the second-year quarterback as he threw for 12 interceptions.
Stroud took part in all 17 games and completed 3,727 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He did not score a rushing touchdown, but did gain 233 yards with his legs.
But there's no need to worry about Stroud's quality. He lost Stefon Diggs, his top offensive target this season, to an ACL tear early in the campaign. Tank Dell also sustained a devastating season-ending injury later in the year.
#8 Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts - 12 INTs
After 17 games and an 8-9 record, the Indianapolis Colts endured yet another dismal season. Also, Anthony Richardson's 2024 campaign was so poor that the second-year quarterback finished lowest in a number of categories, including passer rating, touchdown to interception ratio and completion %.
Among NFL quarterbacks with more than 200 attempts, Richardson's 2024 completion rate of 47.7% was the lowest since 2011. He finished his second year with 1,814 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games.
#7 Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers - 12 INTs
Brock Purdy had his worst run of performances as a starter during the San Francisco 49ers' difficult 2024 season. His numbers were worse than they were the previous season, partly due to the impact of injuries to the team's top offensive weapons, particularly to WR Brandon Aiyuk and RB Christian McCaffrey.
In addition to throwing one more pick (12) this season than the previous one, Purdy's touchdown passes decreased from 31 to 20 and he threw for almost 400 fewer yards than he did in the 2023 season.
#6 Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings - 12 INTs
Sam Darnold had a late-career year in his seventh campaign in the league, throwing for 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. With a 14-3 record, he guided the Minnesota Vikings to a postseason berth.
However, Darnold threw five interceptions in two games against the Jaguars and the Colts in the middle of the season, but his string of turnovers never really put the Vikings in danger. Overall, it was a generally impressive season for the former No. 3 overall pick.
#5 Jared Goff, Detroit Lions - 12 INTs
Jared Goff threw two more interceptions against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football in the regular season finale to take his total for the season to 12.
In two SNF games this season, Goff had seven interceptions, accounting for just over half of his 12 total picks. He finished the regular season with a career-high 37 touchdowns and 4,629 passing yards.
#4 Jameis Winston, Cleveland Browns - 12 INTs
In his seven starts this season, Jameis Winston led the Cleveland Browns to a 2-5 record. The quarterback also tossed for multiple interceptions on four occasions in his seven starts.
He passed for 146 yards and three interceptions in a Week 15 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which was his last start. After that, the team chose to start Dorian Thompson-Robinson at center, and in Week 18, they selected Bailey Zappe as the starting quarterback.
#3 Geno Smith, Seattle Seahawks - 15 INTs
With Geno Smith approaching the last year of his deal, the Seattle Seahawks will have many questions going into the offseason. The veteran quarterback struggled with interceptions this season, particularly in and around the red zone.
Smith had a career-high completion percentage of 70.4 at the end of the season, passing for 4,320 yards and 21 touchdowns.
#2 Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 16 INTs
Quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for 11 touchdowns and two interceptions in his first five games of the season. However, his numbers declined over the next three contests, during which he threw seven interceptions to take his season total to nine.
Mayfield had a respectable season overall, but he ended up finishing with 16 total interceptions. He guided the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their fourth consecutive NFC South championship and a 10-7 record. Additionally, he had a passer rating of 106.8 after completing 71.4% of his passes for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns.
#1 Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons - 16 INTs
In an attempt to play postseason football, the Atlanta Falcons acquired Kirk Cousins in the offseason and gave him a four-year, $180 million contract. But with an 8-9 record at the end of the season—just one win better than the previous year—the team missed out on the playoffs yet again.
Additionally, the Falcons decided to start rookie Michael Penix Jr. in place of Cousins for the final three games of the season.
Cousins had 3,508 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions at the end of his season. With 16 interceptions, he tied with Baker Mayfield, who started all 17 games, for the most in the league.
