The first-round picks in any NFL Draft are often expected to immediately make an impact for their new teams. Many of them did during the 2024 NFL season, but as usual, several others failed to meet their expectations. Here are five players selected in the first round who failed to impress.
Unimpressive first-round picks from 2024 NFL Draft
#5 - Caleb Williams
Caleb Williams was considered to be clearly the top quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was selected by the Chicago Bears with the first pick, and while he flashed his upside at times, Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix had better seasons. Maybe their hiring of Ben Johnson as the new head coach will help to unlock Williams' elite potential.

#4 - Ricky Pearsall
Ricky Pearsall was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 31st pick in the first round. An opportunity opened up for him to play a significant role in their offense when Brandon Aiyuk went down with a season-ending injury, but it was Jauan Jennings who emerged as their WR2 instead. Pearsall finished the season with just 31 receptions for 400 yards.
#3 - Marvin Harrison Jr.
Marvin Harrison Jr. didn't necessarily have a bad rookie season for the Arizona Cardinals, but he didn't meet his massive expectations. He was the first non-quarterback picked this year, but four other rookies recorded more receiving yards than he did.
His 885 yards is surely respectable, but he wasn't the immediate game-changer that the Cardinals likely thought they were getting.
#2 - Olu Fashanu
Olu Fashanu went to the New York Jets with the 11th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Any offensive lineman selected this high should be expected to make an instant impact for their team, but he was unable to earn a starting role to begin the season, despite the Jets' blocking deficiencies.
Fashanu started just seven of their 17 games this season, despite his premium expectations based on draft position.
#1 - Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the first round to theoretically give them a much-needed upgrade to their wide receivers.
Despite Adam Thielen missing time with an injury, as well as Jonathan Mingo and Diontae Johnson being traded during he season, Legette still failed to make an impact. He finished his rookie season with just 497 receiving yards.
